Twenty years ago, one lone man stood contemplatively at a coastal stretch overlooking the Straits of Johor into Singapore. The waterfront was almost bare except for a few trees, the ground was littered with rubbish left by lovers who visited the night before, and the water was so filthy it was impossible to imagine marine life thriving in it. Makeshift hawker stalls could be seen at a far corner near a dilapidated building, a tennis complex of sorts, a public amenity for those who lived nearby. Occasionally, a car or two whizzed by, breaking the stillness that enveloped this dingy embankment. A deserted place by day, a lovers’ hunt by night, and for the rest, a weekend place to hang out, simply because there was nowhere else to go.
For that man standing on the embankment that day, he saw something the layman couldn’t see.
